Avflight and the City of Detroit have marked a major milestone in the revitalisation of Coleman A. Young International Airport (KDET) with the opening of a new state-of-the-art FBO facility – the first new building at the airport in 60 years. City leaders and Avflight executives gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the project’s role in strengthening Detroit’s aviation infrastructure and supporting wider economic development.
Detroit’s Mayor, Mary Sheffield, said the investment reflects growing confidence in the airport’s future, adding: “Avflight’s significant investment and long-term commitment to Coleman A. Young International Airport is an indication of the bright future our airport has ahead of it. The services and amenities Avflight will provide at this new facility will help make City Airport an increasingly popular destination for private aircraft, bringing visitors and investment to Detroit. It also is the first new facility to be built at the airport in 60 years and one of several opening this year.”
The new complex – planned, designed and built by Avflight – includes a 5,000 sq ft terminal, a 20,000 sq ft heated hangar capable of accommodating aircraft up to a G700, and a heated indoor parking garage. Amenities include an open concept lobby with fireplace, pilot lounge, two crew sleep rooms, a conference room and tenant offices, all styled in Avflight’s modern aesthetic.
Joe Meszaros, Avflight’s Senior Vice president of Operations, said the project represents the realisation of a shared vision for the airport, adding: “Today represents the culmination of a shared vision for Coleman A. Young International Airport. This facility strengthens Detroit’s aviation infrastructure while creating new opportunities for business, investment and connectivity. We’re proud to celebrate this milestone alongside our city partners and the community.”
The development aligns with Detroit’s broader investment programme at KDET, including runway upgrades, LED taxiway lighting, ramp improvements, a new control tower, snow removal equipment and expanded aviation education partnerships. Avflight, which has operated at the airport since 2011, emphasised its long term commitment to supporting both aviation growth and community engagement.
