A gateway to the region after which it is named, Antalya Airport has expanded its terminal space by more than 160,000 sq. m. to meet rapidly growing demand for air travel to the Turkish Riviera.
Established by airport operators Fraport and TAV Airports Holding who together have been awarded the contract to operate Antalya Airport, until the end of 2051, the first phase of the expansion project, which began three years ago has seen the international terminal expand by 132,000 sq.m. while the domestic terminal has also seen the addition of 38,000 sq. m. In addition to the expanded terminal space, the project has also included work on the taxiways and a new parking facility.
Passenger traffic has been steadily increasing at the air transport hub, which last year saw 38 million passengers passing through its terminal – a 6.5 per cent increase compared to 2023.
According to Stefan Schulte, Fraport CEO, “the opening of the additional terminal areas is a milestone in strengthening Antalya’s position as the leading holiday airport in the Mediterranean region.”
The construction project, which is the third largest in the German airport operator’s portfolio to date demonstrates Fraport’s “ability to implement complex, demanding projects in a very short timeframe,” added Schulte.
TAV Airports CEO, Serkan Kaptan added that the investment in the terminal expansion will “significantly elevate the passenger experience and provide the capacity for further traffic growth, contributing to the development of the region.”
The expanded space has enabled the introduction of a new range of food and beverage concessions with Fraport teaming up with an airport food specialist to establish a new joint venture called “Best Food for All” (BFA). Currently passengers can choose from a wide variety of cuisines in 29 restaurants.
Plans for the next phase of construction include handing over a new air traffic control tower to the Turkish authorities by 2026. A total of around EUR 850 million has been invested in the airport.
