Airports Council International (ACI) World has projected that annual passenger traffic will reach 9.5 billion in 2024. International passenger traffic is expected to make up 4.1 billion (43%) of the total passengers, while domestic passenger traffic is expected to reach 5.4 billion (57%) of the total by the end of this year.
The airport trade body has released its Annual World Airport Traffic Report, which draws on data from more than 2,700 airports across more than 180 countries and territories.
Commenting on the report, Justin Erbacci, who was recently handed the baton as ACI World Director General taking over from Luis Felipe de Oliveira, said the release of the report highglights the resilience and adaptability of the global aviation sector. “As we continue to navigate an increasingly complex and evolving landscape, ACI World remains committed to supporting our airport members through advocacy and the development of timely resources.”
He added that the insights in the report reaffirm ACI World’s 99.99% forecasting accuracy.
Alongside the release of its annual report, ACI World has also unveiled its bi-annual air traffic demand Advisory Bulletin, which highlights that global passenger traffic reached 8.7 billion in 2023, representing an increase of 30.% from 2022. It also states that by June 2024 year-to-date, total passenger traffic increased by 11% YoY.
ACI also warned that despite positive macroeconomic developments, such as easing inflationary pressures, the medium-to-long-term outlook remains subject to downside risks such as geopolitical conflicts, labour market bottlenecks and aircraft delivery constraints.
