Airport leaders from Birmingham, Edinburgh and Gatwick have underlined the opportunities for growth in the UK’s connectivity.
The three chief executives were talking at the AirportsUK annual general meeting which was held in London on Thursday 5 December. Despite the positive outlook, the panel also warned that challenges remain with the costs and burdens that airports face an ongoing obstacle. It was suggested that government should think twice before viewing aviation as an easy target for tax rises, given the role it plays in economic growth.
Commenting on the panel, AirportsUK Chief Executive, Karen Dee, said it was “fascinating” to hear from the three airport leaders on the “landscape they are anticipating for the next year.”
She added that the potential for growth, from the pent-up demand that exists that will help generate more connectivity with the world, should be welcomed.
“We need to ensure that these messages get through to government and that ministers enable the sector to do what it does best – generate economic growth through connectivity.
“These challenges aside, it is great that there is such a positive outlook for airports, as long as they can continue to operate in a stable, sustainable and affordable framework.”
