The Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Unions of the Agency for the Safety of Air Navigation in Africa and Madagascar (USYCAA) strike notice is maintained and will take effect from 25-27 August 2022. It is then due to continue for an indefinite period until the “total satisfaction of all its demands,” according to a statement by USYCAA.

USYCAA is a non-profit organisation which was formed in 2018 to promote the safety, efficiency and regularity of air navigation in the airspace of the ASECNA member states through the improvement of working conditions of air traffic controllers. The countries in which it operates include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Togo. It has nearly 700 air traffic controllers as members.

The statement from USYCAA underlined that the “last common thread maintained by air traffic controllers for the continuation of healthy and frank discussions with the administration has been unilaterally broken.”

It went on to add that the Director General, Mohamed Moussa, no longer wants to hear about the Federation of Associations of Air Traffic Controllers of ASCECNA (FACAA) and has refused any dialogue with USYCAA.

ASECNA air traffic controllers are seeking the strengthening of operational capacities, professional development and security for the career path of air traffic controllers.

USYCAA’s statement concluded with: “Considering the current petition signed by 90% of all controllers, considering the non-signing of the 2022-2-24 works agreement given the imperative of preserving flight safety in this depressive, demoralising and tumultuous climate, the USYCAA has no choice but to call for a cessation of work, while remaining available for an immediate opening of negotiations with consideration for trade union organisations and its own prerogatives.”
